Lira City Council authorities have accused some politicians of attempting to frustrate the city’s mandatory boda-boda registration exercise by allegedly encouraging riders to boycott the initiative.
The allegations were made by the Lira City Council Public Relations Officer, Mr. Robert Okello Ayo, who said the city leadership had received reports that some politicians were mobilizing boda-boda riders to resist the ongoing registration process.
Without naming the individuals involved, Okello claimed the politicians were misleading riders by alleging that the registration exercise was intended to benefit city officials personally. He dismissed the claims as false, saying the initiative is aimed at improving security, identifying motorcycle riders and promoting order within the city.
He urged those behind the alleged misinformation to stop politicizing development programmes and instead focus on improving service delivery for the communities they represent.
Despite the reported resistance, Okello said the exercise had registered significant progress, with about 5,000 boda-boda riders already registered and issued with identification cards and registration stickers.
He said the city aims to register more than 8,000 boda-boda riders operating within Lira City.
Okello appealed to riders who have not yet registered to take advantage of the ongoing exercise, warning that once the registration period closes, operators without official city identification cards and registration stickers will not be allowed to operate within the city.
According to the city authorities, the registration exercise is intended to enhance public safety, improve accountability in the transport sector and support law enforcement agencies in addressing crime involving motorcycles.
Lira City Council has reaffirmed its commitment to completing the registration exercise and appealed to boda-boda riders to cooperate with the authorities to promote safer and more orderly transport services.
The officials did not identify the politicians they accused, and no independent evidence was provided to substantiate the claims.
