Growing abuse of alcohol and narcotic drugs has been identified as one of the major drivers of rising insecurity in Awei Sub-county, Alebtong District, prompting security officials to call for stronger community action to combat crime.
The concerns were raised by the North Kyoga Regional Community Liaison Officer, Ms. Acen Lillian, during a security meeting held in Ojul Parish following an increase in reported cases of theft, violence, rape and waylaying within the sub-county.
According to Ms. Acen, excessive alcohol consumption and drug abuse, particularly among young people, have contributed significantly to criminal activities by impairing judgment and encouraging unlawful behaviour.
She said reducing substance abuse among both men and women would help lower crime rates and improve safety within communities.
Ms. Acen also blamed inadequate parental supervision for exposing children to negative peer influence and increasing their chances of engaging in criminal activities.
She urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s movements, friendships and behaviour to protect them from harmful influences.
The Community Liaison Officer further called on police officers and local leaders in Awei Sub-county to intensify night patrols, saying regular security operations would deter criminals, protect property and restore public confidence.
Meanwhile, the LC III Chairperson of Awei Sub-county, Mr. Sam Oyena Obonyo, expressed concern over parents who shield children suspected of committing crimes, saying the practice frustrates efforts by security agencies to enforce the law.
Mr. Oyena stressed that security is a shared responsibility and urged residents to cooperate with local leaders and security agencies by reporting suspicious individuals and supporting crime prevention initiatives.
