Police in Apac District are investigating a disturbing case of attempted murder following the rescue of a baby girl who was allegedly dumped alive in a pit latrine at a private primary school in Apac Municipality.
The incident occurred at Apac Pride Nursery and Primary School in Temogo A Cell, Temogo Ward, Arocha Division, where police and rescue teams mounted an emergency operation that led to the successful retrieval of the child alive.
According to a statement issued by North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the matter was reported in the early hours of Saturday, May 24, 2026, at around 3:32 a.m. by the school watchman, identified as 23-year-old Eling Brian.
Preliminary police findings indicate that at about 3:00 a.m., the watchman heard persistent crying coming from the school toilet area. Suspecting that a child could have been trapped inside the pit latrine, he immediately alerted officers at Apac Central Police Station.
Responding officers rushed to the scene and confirmed the presence of a baby inside the pit latrine before informing the District Police Commander, SP Mirembe Norah, who coordinated an emergency rescue operation involving the North Kyoga Police Fire and Rescue Services.
A joint rescue team led by SP Ouni, together with officers from Apac Central Police Station, managed to retrieve the baby girl alive from the pit latrine after a tense operation.

Police said the victim is believed to be approximately eight months old. She was immediately rushed to Apac Main Hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment and care.
Investigators revealed that the school is a private institution offering classes from nursery to Primary Four. Authorities also observed that the school lacks a perimeter fence and that the pit latrine openings are unusually wide, making the area easily accessible.
Police have since recorded statements from the school director, Ms. Ayugi Sarah, and the watchman who reported the incident.
However, the identity of the baby’s parents or guardians remains unknown, and no arrests had been made by the time of filing this report. Police say investigations are ongoing to identify the person or persons responsible for the act.
A case of attempted murder has been registered, although investigators say the motive behind the incident has not yet been established. Police suspect that domestic violence or child neglect could be among the possible causes.
North Kyoga Police strongly condemned acts of violence and neglect against children, urging the public to seek lawful and humane ways of resolving domestic and family-related disputes.
Authorities have appealed to anyone with information that could help identify the child or those responsible for abandoning her to report to the nearest police station as investigations continue.
