Apac District, April 29, 2026 — Security operatives in Apac District have recovered an illegal SAR rifle during an intelligence-led operation, as efforts intensify to track down a fugitive suspect linked to unlawful firearm possession and a previous murder case.
The operation, conducted at around 4:00 PM in Amia Amola Village, Alworoceng Parish, Ibuje Sub-county, was carried out by a joint team of intelligence officers, including the Deputy District Internal Security Officer (DISO) and Crime Intelligence personnel.
According to the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the team recovered an SAR rifle in good working condition but without ammunition from the residence of Auna Moses, a 56-year-old teacher at Atigolwok Primary School in Chegere Sub-county.
Okema explained that preliminary findings indicate the firearm was illegally possessed and that the suspect has been on the run since January 2026 following a murder incident.
“The suspect, Auna Moses, is alleged to have been involved in circumstances surrounding the murder of Otim Moses, also known as Ebong Francis, which occurred on January 1, 2026,” he noted.
Police say the killing was allegedly carried out by Auna’s brother, Oume Saidi, who was later killed by a mob on January 15, 2026. Community members have reportedly accused Auna Moses of inciting the act and using the firearm to threaten residents, as well as engaging in poaching activities.
Okema further revealed that the suspect had recently resurfaced and was aware he was still wanted by authorities.
“On April 28, 2026, he presented himself to the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) in Apac in the company of his brother, expressing willingness to hand over the firearm, which he claimed to have inherited from his late brother,” Okema said.
However, when security officers followed up the next day to arrest him and recover the weapon, the suspect had already fled the area.
“The firearm was later handed over to police by his relatives,” Okema added.
Police confirmed that the rifle is unmarked, has no ammunition, but was found well maintained. It is currently being kept at Apac Central Police Station as exhibits.
No arrests have been made so far, but police say efforts to trace and apprehend Auna Moses are ongoing.
