A tragic lightning strike has claimed the life of a teacher and left seventeen others injured at Global View Primary School in Innora Village, Kamdini Sub-county, Oyam District, police have confirmed.
According to a statement issued by SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Public Relations Officer of the North Kyoga Police Region, the incident occurred on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at around 3:00pm when lightning struck the school premises.
The lightning strike injured sixteen pupils, who were rushed to Diicunyi Health Centre III for treatment. One teacher, identified as Otim Jimmy, was taken to Atapara Hospital for further medical attention.
Tragically, another teacher, identified only as Joseph, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Atapara Hospital, where his body is currently being kept.
Police officers from Kamdini Police Station responded promptly to the scene using a patrol vehicle, transporting the injured to nearby health facilities. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and police say the scene will be revisited as part of efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Mr. Okema noted that the identities of the injured pupils are still being compiled and assured the public that updates will be shared as more details become available.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, once again raising concerns about lightning safety measures in schools, especially during the rainy season.
