Bishop of Lira Diocese, Rt Rev Sanctus Lino Wanok, delivered a powerful message to seminarians of Sons of St. Pius of Pietrelcina (SSPP), emphasizing that “the only religion we have is Jesus Christ.”

During his visit to the SSPP community in Ngetta, Lira City, he dismissed the idea of starting a “new religion,” stressing, “Religion is only one, it is not an idea but a person. He is Jesus Christ, and you cannot start Jesus Christ.”

In a world where “politics has become a politics of killing and destruction,” Bishop Wanok told the young men that their formation as priests is crucial to bringing meaning to world events by leading people to the Eucharist. “Your friendship with the Eucharist is essential,” he emphasized.

Encouraging the seminarians to observe the world, reflect on their findings, and return to Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, Bishop Wanok assured them, “God will build you up.” Expressing pride in the seminarians, he thanked Fr. Michael Onyango SSPP for his sacrifice in journeying with the young men.

In the heart of Lira Diocese, Uganda, a spiritual brotherhood blossoms with a mission to rekindle Christ’s love: the Sons of St. Pius of Pietrelcina (SSPP). Founded in Atego village, Ngetta sub-county, this Franciscan religious community is deeply rooted in the life and mission of the Catholic Church.

Born from divine inspiration and prophetic urgency felt by Rev. Fr. Michael Onyango and Sr. Margaret Awor, SSPP emerged as a bold response to pressing challenges facing the Church and society: declining faith, moral decay among youth, tribal strife, poverty, environmental harm, and rising hatred and violence.

Inspired by the charism of St. Padre Pio and St. Francis of Assisi, these Padre Pio Brothers seek to fan the flame of Christ’s love in a world in need.

Today, the community comprises ten dedicated seminarians and one priest, with two seminarians poised for ordination to the Diaconate in September 2025.
