Background on Jinja Catholic Diocese
Established on August 5, 1966, the Diocese of Jinja serves the culturally rich Busoga region—bordered by Lake Victoria, Lake Kyoga, the River Nile, and River Mpologoma. Evangelization in Busoga began in 1889–1890 with the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers) and was later strengthened by the Mill Hill Missionaries in 1899, who laid the foundation for today’s vibrant Catholic community through the establishment of parishes, schools, and health centers. Currently, the Diocese of Jinja covers ten districts: Jinja, Kamuli, Iganga, Bugiri, Kaliro, Buyende, Namayingo, Namutumba, Luuka, and Mayuge.
