As the first term of the 2026 academic year entered its second week, schools across the Lango sub-region have reported a significant improvement in learner attendance.

A mini-survey conducted by our reporters in several primary schools indicates that while turnout was low during the first week of term, the majority of learners have now resumed classes.

Speaking to our reporter, Polycarp Ogwang, the head teacher of Alemere Primary School in Amolatar District, confirmed the positive trend. He revealed that out of 1,352 learners enrolled at the school, more than 972 had reported back by Friday, 20th February 2026, describing the response as encouraging compared to the previous week.

A similar situation was observed at Ogogong Primary School in Aloo Sub-county, Alebtong District. The Chairperson of the School Management Committee, Milton Eling, said learner attendance has greatly improved. Of the 540 pupils enrolled at the school, 321 have so far returned for the new term.

Meanwhile, Sam Opira, the Secretary for Health and Education in Apac District, expressed satisfaction with the rising numbers but noted that a number of learners remain at home. He urged parents and guardians to ensure their children report back to school immediately.

Opira warned that beginning this week, parents who fail to send their children to school may face action from authorities, stressing the importance of education and adherence to the official school calendar.

With attendance steadily improving, education leaders across Lango have called on parents and guardians to provide learners with the necessary scholastic materials to support effective learning. Authorities remain optimistic that full attendance will be achieved in the coming days as the term progresses.
