Iceme, Lira Diocese – The atmosphere at Mary Mother of the Church Marian Shrine in Iceme was filled with joy and gratitude on August 15, 2025, as Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok, Bishop of Lira Diocese, warmly welcomed Most Rev. John Baptist Odama, Archbishop Emeritus of Gulu, on the occasion of his Golden Jubilee of priesthood and Silver Jubilee of episcopal ministry.
Speaking before thousands of pilgrims gathered for the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, Bishop Wanok hailed Archbishop Odama’s fifty years of priestly service as “a living homily—proclaiming peace where there was conflict, hope where there was despair, and reconciliation where there was division.”
In an emotional tribute, the Bishop described the Jubilee as not only a personal milestone for the Archbishop, but also “a reminder to us all of the faithfulness of God.” Quoting Psalm 126:3, he said: “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.”
Bishop Wanok extended a warm welcome to all pilgrims, government and cultural leaders, priests, and religious present, noting that their presence made the celebration complete. He called for unity in prayer for Archbishop Odama, for all priests, and for the mission of the Church.
Addressing the Jubilarian directly, Bishop Wanok said: “Your Grace, today Iceme Shrine is your home, and all of us here are your family welcome back to the heart that has always loved you.”
The Golden Jubilee celebration was held during the Eucharistic celebration presided over by Archbishop Odama himself, in the presence of thousands of faithful who had travelled from across the region to honor his life of service to God and the Church.
End.
