Unlicensed betting operators in Kwania District risk immediate closure following new resolutions passed by the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board and district security authorities.
The decision was made during a security meeting held yesterday at Kwania Mayor’s Garden in Aduku Town Council. Other measures passed include banning under-18s from attending discos, enforcing midnight closure of bars, and restricting livestock movement without an LC1 stamp.
Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) Aturu Abraham Darabim said the clampdown was necessary due to rising crime in the district, which he linked to drug abuse and betting.
“We have seen an increase in rape, theft, and house break-ins. These crimes are fueled by marijuana smoking, drug addiction, and betting, which have left many young people unproductive,” he said.
District Police Commander (DPC) SP Arison Arinda echoed the concern, pointing a finger at parents and local leaders.
“Many parents have abandoned their role in guiding and disciplining their children. Local leaders are also failing in their duties. If this continues, we shall launch intensive operations against criminal gangs,” Arinda warned.
Local business owners welcomed the resolutions. Walter Okullo, a trader in Aduku Town Council, said the crackdown would help revive struggling businesses.
“Our businesses have been deteriorating because of insecurity. This intervention gives us hope of restoration,” Okullo noted.
The resolutions are expected to be rolled out immediately, with security forces vowing strict enforcement.
