Deep in the serene and green landscapes of Kole district, Northern Uganda, stands Alito Catholic Parish, dedicated under the loving patronage of Our Lady of Mercy. It is more than a place of worship; it is a beacon of hope, a refuge for souls, and a spiritual home to thousands of faithful scattered across its 46 chapels.
Now, the parish is preparing for a profound and historic moment: the pastoral visit of Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok, the Bishop of Lira Diocese, scheduled from 16th to 20th September 2025. This is not just an ordinary visit. It is a moment of grace and renewal. The Bishop comes as a father to his children, a shepherd to his flock, and as a messenger of Christ’s peace and blessing.
But before this sacred encounter can take place, there is a cry from the heart of Alito Parish, a need, a humble plea for help. The priests’ house, which has long served as the dwelling of pastoral care, is now undergoing much-needed renovations. Walls are being repaired, rooms repainted, and humble efforts made to uplift the face of the presbytery, all to offer a dignified space for the Bishop and future pastoral ministry.
A Journey Blessed by Heaven
On 7th August 2025, we embarked on a courtesy visit from Lira City, passing through Ngetta, making our way to Alito.
As we journeyed, drizzling rain fell gently upon the land, a sign, we believe, of God’s blessing and favor.
Along the fairly smooth road, we passed farmers tending their gardens, and traders animated in daily hustle, a reflection of the vibrant life and resilience of the people after the war.
Upon arrival, the parish welcomed us with a sight to behold. The compound was green, fresh, and blooming with colorful flowers, a quiet testament to life, growth, and spiritual vitality. Despite the challenges, this community is alive. Hope breathes in every chapel, in every hymn, and in every prayer.
The Sacrifice of the Faithful
We met Catechist Peter Ketty Oryem, Chairperson of the Central Organizing Committee, who humbly walked us through the renovation work, room by room, wall by wall. He shared how the community has been raising funds locally, digging deep into the little they have, moved only by love for their parish and the joy of welcoming their shepherd.
No donor, no big organization, no external sponsor, just the faith of the people, the strength of unity, and the dream of a church renewed. In one corner of the parish compound, there is a piggery project, a bold step toward self-reliance.
In another, Fr. Molinaro Memorial Nursery School, where the laughter of children lifts the spirit. You can already imagine these little ones singing welcome songs, their innocent voices rising like incense to the heavens when the Bishop arrives.
The Coming of the Shepherd
According to Catechist Emmanuel Stella Ogolo, the Bishop will meet leaders, open Eucharistic Centers, administer sacraments, and bless many souls:
16th September – A meeting with the parish pastoral council, cultural, civil, and political leaders.
17th September – Opening of Obutu St. Peter and Paul Eucharistic Center and Confirmation celebration.
18th September – Opening of Acan Kado St. Augustine Eucharistic Center and commissioning of 14 catechists.
19th September – Visit to Onyut St. Mark to install Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist and open another center.
20th September – At Walela St. John the Baptist, the Bishop will open a Eucharistic Center and bless the marriages of 56 couples.
After his visit, the parish will boast of eight Eucharistic Centers—a spiritual legacy that will nourish generations to come.
A Gentle Appeal to You
Dear reader, dear Christian, dear friend of the Church, Alito Parish needs your help. The faithful have already given all they can. But the work is not yet finished. The walls still need paint. The rooms still need fittings. The compound needs preparation. All this, not for luxury but for dignity, for honor, and the love of God’s house.
This is a call to your heart. Not every one of us can go to Alito. Not everyone will see the Bishop’s visit. But each of us can be part of it, through a small offering, a donation, or a prayer.
“Let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.” – 2 Corinthians 9:7
Whether it is 10,000 UGX, 50,000, 100,000, or more, your contribution will help complete the work. It will be a gift to the Bishop. A gift to the parish. And most importantly, a gift to God.
Let us come together, like the early Christians, sharing what we have so that no need goes unmet. Let us make this Bishop’s visit not just a moment, but a testimony of faith, unity, and love.
If you feel moved to contribute, please reach out to the Parish Priest, Fr. John Bosco Oryema, on 0784219004 or the organizing committee, and they will guide you.
Together, we can say:
Yes, Lord—we have prepared the way for You. Come and dwell in our midst.
End.
