Police in the North Kyoga region are investigating two separate fatal incidents in Dokolo and Oyam districts, including the alleged killing of a one-month-old baby and a mob attack that claimed the life of a suspected pig thief.
Police in Dokolo District have arrested a 40-year-old woman for allegedly strangling her one-month-old baby boy to death under circumstances that remain unclear.
The arrest was confirmed by the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Jimmy Patrick Okema, during the weekly police press briefing held at Lira City Central Police Station.
According to SP Okema, the suspect, identified as Apiri Sandra, is a resident of Okwalongwen Village in Amwoma Sub-county, Dokolo District.
Her arrest followed a report lodged by Okello Robert, 36, a resident of the same village. Police allege that on June 20, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m., Apiri strangled her one-month-old son, identified only as Okello.
A murder case was subsequently registered at Amwoma Sub-county Police Station, prompting homicide detectives to visit the scene and commence investigations.
Police recorded statements from relevant witnesses and documented the scene through photographs. The infant’s body was later transported to Kaberamaido Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
SP Okema said the suspect remains in police custody pending further investigations. He added that the case file has been compiled and is ready for submission to the Resident State Attorney for legal guidance.
In a separate incident, police in Oyam District arrested a suspect in connection with the alleged murder of a man who was reportedly beaten to death by an angry mob over accusations of pig theft.
The suspect, identified as Okene Charles, was arrested following the incident that occurred on June 21, 2026, in Atong-Lela Cell.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that Ongom Bosco, together with two other individuals identified as Ogwang Ronald and Owani Ronald, was intercepted by community members on allegations of stealing a pig.
The trio was reportedly assaulted by residents, although the two other suspects managed to escape from the scene.
Police officers later visited the area, recorded witness statements and transferred Ongom’s body to Anyeke Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination.
Police have strongly condemned acts of mob justice, describing them as unlawful and a violation of the criminal justice process.
SP Okema urged members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead report suspected offenders to the police for investigation and prosecution through the established legal system.
Authorities say investigations into both incidents are ongoing, while efforts are underway to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the fatal assault in Oyam.
