The Bishop of Lira Diocese, Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok, has called on all young Christians to actively engage in economic activities as a sustainable way to fight poverty.

Bishop Wanok appealed today while addressing youth leaders from across the Diocese during the first-ever youth engagement with the prelate, held at the ordination grounds in Lira City.

He revealed that the Diocese is preparing to roll out a program aimed at ensuring that every youth establishes at least a simple income-generating project at their homestead to combat poverty and famine.

The Bishop warned that life is becoming increasingly difficult, especially as donor support from countries like the USA and other Western nations continues to decline, due in part to changing foreign policies and ongoing global conflicts, including the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

To address these emerging challenges, Bishop Wanok urged the youth to embrace self-reliance initiatives promoted by the Diocese, such as poultry farming and tree planting, to improve livelihoods and foster environmental sustainability.

Turning to politics, the Bishop encouraged young people to take the lead in the forthcoming general elections by voting for good and accountable leaders. He strongly cautioned them against being manipulated by selfish politicians offering small tokens in exchange for votes.

Bishop Wanok expressed concern that many politicians exploit the youth during campaigns and later abandon them once elected.

He then encouraged the youth to keep close to the Bishop’s office to benefit from upcoming opportunities and to seek spiritual guidance when needed.

The Youth Chaplain of Lira Diocese, who is also the Parish Priest of Aduku Catholic Parish, Rev. Fr. Rogers Okello, urged the youth leaders to take the Bishop’s message seriously. He emphasized that young people are vital to the growth and development of the Church, especially through collaboration and mentorship from Church leaders.

Meanwhile, the Diocesan Youth Coordinator, Abwango Isaac Ogwang, called for the revival of structured youth leadership frameworks with clearly defined roles and responsibilities, to enable effective service delivery among youth leaders.
